Assignment

How do I create a group assignment?

First, set up the appropriate groups and groupings.  Then create the assignment, including the following steps (you can also perform them on an existing assignment). Turn editing on then go to the section of your course where the assignment is located and click on ‘Edit’ and then ‘Edit’ Settings’ from the drop down menu.

Scroll down the page to ‘Group submission settings’ and click on ‘Show more’.

In the ‘Require group to make a submission’ box, select ‘Yes’. Then in the ‘Grouping for student groups’ select the name of the grouping you created for this assignment as the choice for that box. If you select ‘Yes’ for ‘Require group to make submission’ only students that are part of an assigned group will be able to submit an assignment. If you select ‘Yes’ for ‘Require all group members submit’ then all members of a group will have to click their submit button’ before their group’s assignment is officially submitted to you. Once you have made the tweaks you need, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click on ‘Save and return to course’.

How do I remove a locked assignment submission so that the student may resubmit?

Open the assignment from the course homepage and click ‘View all submissions’.

Place a check beside the student's name whose submission you want to unlock. From the ‘With selected…’ drop down menu choose ‘Unlock submissions’ and then click ‘Go’.

You will now be asked to verify that that is what you want to do. Click ‘OK’ to verify.

How do I collect student assignments?

Moodle does this for you. You do not need to download the assignments if you don’t want to. You now can collect and grade all assignments within Moodle. To do so, open the assignment activity and follow the link to ‘View all submissions’.

Students can  now upload their submissions. You will now see Moodle’s inline grading window (see image below) which will allow you to (1) input a student’s grade, (2a) type feedback comments or (2b) mark up a PDF submission, (3) save the grade, (4) notify or don’t notify the student that the assignment has been marked and (5) continue to the next student. Inline grading will not work for Word documents. That means you will need to download each Word document, annotate each and then upload them again to Moodle to return to students. Therefore, it is recommend that you have your students submit in PDF.

And here is what it looks like if a student submits a Word document.
