Enrolment
How are students enrolled in my course?
Student enrolments to your course happen automatically and are updated regularly throughout the course. Students will first appear in your course two weeks out from course start date.
How can I enrol a teacher, TA or student in my course?
Faculty cannot enrol teachers. If you are sharing the teaching load, you have to have that individual added to the course via the Registrar’s Office. If that person needs teaching access but is not sharing the teaching load, he/she can be enrolled by you as a non-editing teacher. If you want them enrolled as a teacher you will need to contact the E-Learning Office.
How do I remove students or teachers from my Moodle course?
In the administration block, go to ‘Course administration’ and click on ‘Users’.
Next click on ‘Enrolled users’.
Find the person in the list of enrolled users. Click the grey ‘X’ icon at the bottom-right of the enrolment method’s box.
A warning message will appear: Do you really want to unenrol user ‘Firstname Lastname’ from course ‘coursename’? If you wish to do so, click ‘Continue’.
How do I check which students have access to my course?
Go to the ‘Administration’ block, look under ‘Course administration’ and click ‘Users’.
Then click ‘Enrolled users’.
You will now see a list of all participants in your course including their assigned roles (student, teacher, non-editing teacher).
How do I restrict access of a Moodle course to specific students using an enrolment key?
Under ‘Course administration’ within the ‘Administration’ block click on ‘Users’.
Next click on ‘Enrolment methods’.
From the ‘Add method’ drop down menu select ‘self-enrolment’.
You can now name your self-enrolment, create a password as well as change some other features about who is and isn’t allowed to self-enrol. When finished scroll to the bottom and click ‘Add method’.
Now you will need to send the enrolment key (password) that you created and a link to the course. To capture the link, return to your course’s start page and copy the url.
Send that and your course’s self-enrolment key to the students you want to give course access to. Those students will still need to login to Moodle using their university username and password. Once they have done that, they will see this screen and can enter the enrolment key to gain access to the course.
Can students self-enrol in my course?
Yes. You need to set up an enrolment key and send that as well as a link to the course to the student.
Can I get pictures of the students in my class?
Moodle has an option to add a photo to a user’s profile. Individuals may opt to change or remove their Moodle photo, if they add one at all. While you can get a photo roster of your class via the Moodle participants list, the ‘Moodle Roster Report’ will help you learn student names, and also generate a printout of your photo roster.
Can I provide guest access to a course?
Yes, however, those individuals won’t be able to do everything your regular students do. They cannot:
- Post in forums
- Edit wiki pages
- Participate in a chat
- Take quizzes
- Submit assignments
- Add glossary or database activity entries or comments
- Receive any scores or grades (because of the read-only access)
Go to the ‘Administration’ block, look under ‘Course administration’ and click ‘Users’.
Next click on ‘Enrolment methods’.
Next click on ‘Add method’ and then click on ‘Guest access’.
You can now create a password and then click ‘Add method’ to save and exit.
Next, from your course page, copy the course’s URL and send that to your guest.
Once they access the link, your guest will be able to login by clicking on the ‘Log in as a guest’ button.
From there, your guest enters the password you provided and clicks ‘Submit’.
