Safety and Security
How secure is Moodle?
At UPEI users connect to Moodle using the https protocol which securely encrypts communications between both the client (your computer) and server (Moodle). It is important that you do not share your password with others and that the password you have created is a strong one. Moodle is being monitored daily by the ELO office and the IT department.
What if I did something wrong and accidentally “broke it” - could it be easily fixed?
Moodle can be backed-up at any point. If a backup was made 5 minutes before you “broke it”, chances are it can be fixed easily. You should make a habit of backing up your course on a regular basis. You can learn how to backup and restore your course here. If you have accidentally deleted something, Moodle has a recycle bin that will store deleted activities and resources for seven days. You can find it in your course’s ‘Administration’ block under ‘Course administration’.
Can I track and search what people do and post in Moodle?
Yes, teachers can do that within their own courses. It may be useful to do so in order to keep an eye on student engagement and involvement in the course. To do so, in the Administration block under ‘Course Administration’ click on ‘Reports’.
Then click on ‘Logs’.
You can now use the filters to specify the exact nature of the activity that you want to see.
Once you have set your filters, click on the ‘Get these logs’ button and your report will look something like this.
Can I backup my course so I don't lose things?
Yes, you can backup your course and download it for future use. Go to the ‘ Administration’ block and click on ‘Backup’.
Next you will see Backup settings. As part of the default mode, many of these boxes will automatically be checked off for you. Check a box to add it or uncheck a box to remove it from the backup. When you are done click ‘Next’.
Next you can choose what components of your course you want to include in the backup and if you want the existing student data already submitted to the course to be backed up along with it. When finished, click the ‘Next’ button to move on or the ‘Previous’ button to go back a screen.
Now you can review the settings in your course to be backed up and the ones that won’t be backed up. Scroll down the screen to see the complete list. Please note, student data can only be carried forward in a backup by a Moodle Administrator.
If everything looks good, then click ‘Perform backup’.
Then click ‘Continue’.
You should now download your backup and save it to your UPEI Google Drive or Dropbox account, or external storage device.
